About Skills Beyond
Skills Beyond is a small, family-owned mobile driving school on Sydney's North Shore. I'm Avin, the instructor who teaches every lesson myself, from your very first hour right through to test day.
I want to help you become a safe, capable driver who feels confident making decisions on the road, not just someone who knows enough to pass the test.
Our story
Skills Beyond Driving School
We are a small, family-owned business, founded over 10 years ago, teaching young family members and friends who wanted to become competent, safe drivers before sitting their test. Word got around, other families started asking, and Skills Beyond grew from there into a proper mobile driving school across the North Shore, Hills District and Northern Beaches.
I believe learners do best when lessons are personal, consistent and built around the individual. Rather than rushing through a fixed lesson plan, I take the time to understand what you already know, where you need help and what may be making you nervous.
How I teach
Our Commitment and Teaching Philosophy
The focus is on you as an individual, not a fixed lesson plan. I build your skills gradually, skill by skill, only moving on when you've mastered the last one, so as to remove the anxiety that comes from being rushed.

Quiet Streets First
Lessons usually begin on quieter streets, where you can get used to the car and practise the basics in a controlled setting. As your confidence and skills improve, we gradually move onto busier roads and more challenging driving situations.

No Set Script
No two learners arrive with the same nerves or the same experience behind them. Some people are ready to move ahead quickly, while others need more time. Both are completely normal.
The real goal
Preparing You to Drive on Your Own
Passing your driving test is a big achievement, but learning to drive is about more than test day. The real goal is making sure you feel ready to drive safely when there is no parent or instructor sitting beside you.
In my experience, the months right after getting a licence are when new drivers make their first real mistakes, simply because every decision on the road now belongs to them alone. This is why my teaching is designed to put you in charge early, making the calls yourself while I am still there to talk you through it.
I spend a lot of those early lessons handing over judgement calls I would normally step in on, things like when to change lanes on a busy road, how much space to leave a cyclist, or when to hold back at a give way sign rather than push through.
There May Be Times When I Barely Say a Word
That is intentional. It gives you the chance to read the road, make a decision, and take responsibility for it yourself while I am still in the car. Confidence built this way tends to last, because it was earned on real roads.
Your choice
Manual or Automatic
There is no single option that suits everyone. The right choice depends on your confidence, experience and the type of car you plan to drive. There is no extra charge to learn in a manual with dual controls, and you are welcome to practise or sit your test in an automatic afterwards if that suits you better. Either way, the car adjusts to you, not the other way around.

I encourage lessons with a qualified instructor from the get-go, before a parent or friend gets behind the wheel with you.
Learn It Right the First Time
Starting with professional lessons helps you learn safe driving methods from day one.
Avoid Habits That Need Undoing
It can also prevent you from developing habits that may need to be corrected later, which takes longer than learning them properly to begin with.
Then Practise at Home
Once you have had that professional grounding, supervised practice with a parent builds on the right foundations instead of working against them. This can make practice calmer for everyone in the car.
Planning ahead
How Many Lessons Will You Need
There is no exact number of lessons that suits every learner. It depends on your age, previous experience, confidence and how often you can practise between professional lessons.
Many learners have around 10 to 15 professional lessons as they work towards becoming test-ready, but some may need fewer and others may benefit from more. I will always be honest about your progress and the areas that still need work.
3 Logbook Hours for Every 1 Hour Driven
Under the logbook rules set by Transport for NSW, structured lessons with a certified instructor count as 3 hours in your logbook for every 1 hour driven, up to a maximum of 10 lesson hours, so ten hours of lessons with me can add up to 30 logbook hours on their own.
The additional credit can be helpful, but it should not be treated as a shortcut. The aim is still to gain enough experience across different roads, traffic conditions and times of day to drive safely on your own.

That's what Skills Beyond comes down to. You'll have the same instructor, me, from your very first lesson to the day you're ready for your test, so nothing about the car, the teaching style or the person sitting next to you changes halfway through.
You are not expected to start again or explain your progress to someone new halfway through your lessons. The car, teaching style and person sitting beside you remain familiar, allowing each lesson to build naturally on the last.
